Digital textile printing set to grow by 20.1% from 2014 to 2019
The digital textile printing market is forecast to grow at an average annual growth rate of 20.1% in value terms between 2014 and 2019, according to a new market study by Smithers Pira.

A total of around 650 million square metres of fabric were printed digitally in the year to mid-2014. It is estimated that total digital textile printing output will rise to 1.6 billion square metres annually by 2019. This includes displays (soft signage, etc and direct-to-garment – DTG).

The new study – The Future of Digital Textile Printing to 2019  – examines the growth of the digital textiles market from 2009 to the current year, and the potential for its future development over the next five years with comprehensive forecasts to 2019, broken down by end-use sector, print process, textile media and geographic region. It looks at the major drivers for the adoption of digital printing in the textiles market and the potential barriers to its continued expansion.

Globally, digital textile printing (value) grew at more than 45% annually between 2004 and 2009 after standing at virtually zero in 2002. Since 2009, growth has slowed somewhat, but on average, the growth in digital textile printing output, excluding substrate value, grew at an annual rate of 25% between 2009 and 2012. Between 2012 and 2014 the average CAGR was 19.4%. The market predicted an overall average CAGR over the next five years to 2019 of 20.1%.

The table below shows global digital textile printing over 15 years (2004–2019), by area covered. The sector has moved on from its early days prior to major inkjet penetration in 2004, through to today’s complex and thriving global market for inkjet machines and ink for digital textiles. A survey of 47 interviews covering 75% of the ink revenues and 50% of the machine providers, along with players in media manufacture and creative, indicated that overall output growth (including displays) from 2013 to 2014, was around 19.4% year-on-year, compared to the average of 23% over the 2009–2012 period. Garments were growing at 22% while displays were growing at 16%, 2013–2014.

Based on extensive primary research, including interviews with global key players, The Future of Digital Textile Printing to 2019 presents global volume and revenue projections providing actionable industry market information projecting through to 2019.
